Abstract

Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase written by Jonathan Strout is a horror fiction novel. The novel follows Lucy Carlyle, who has a psychic ability, joins a paranormal agency called Lockwood & Co. where she met Anthony Lockwood and George Cubbins. This study aims to discover the friendship in the novel Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud, specifically the portrayal of friendship by the three main characters, Lucy Carlyle, Anthony Lockwood, and George Cubbins. This study used a qualitative descriptive method which is described by Creswell & Creswell (2018) and utilized a theory of friendship by Aristotle (1934) from Nicomachean Ethics, the three kinds of friendship. The findings of this research reveal that the friendship among the three main characters has been shown through friendship of utility (a friend who gives support and can be reliable), friendship of pleasure (a friend who shares same interest and enjoyment), and friendship of virtue (a friend who gives respect and compassion). This study's limited scope suggests opportunities for future research to explore the novel's portrayal of friendship within a broader sociocultural context.
Mathew Gerrit Turang
