THE MEANING OF SYMBOL AT THE MOTIF OF MINAHASA BATIK

Abstrak

The purpose of this research is to find out the explanation concerning meaning of the symbol at the motif of Minahasa batik. The subject of this research is the batik cloths which have a lot of motif and symbol. The method used in this research was qualitative research in which, the primary data is the kind of batik at Wale Batik Minahasa whereas the secondary sources are some related books used as the references. The data of this research were analyzed by applying semiotic theory sign and symbols. The result of this research can be concluded that Batik Minahasa has five (5) patterns it is called: Human Patterns, waruga pattern, Watu Pinawetengan Patterns, Plants pattern and Endangered Species Pattern. From the 5 (five) patterns there are also 22 (twenty two) motifs taken from the 5 (five) patterns and has been developed and created by Wale Batik Minahasa. In Minahasa batik there is no such thing as the main motive or companion motif. All Motives are made to preserve the existing of culture in the land of Minahasa. Name of these motives are: Toar Lumimuut, Kabasaran, dance Maengket, Wewengkelan, Manguni, Bunaken, Rumah Panggung, Burung Pisok, Daun Gedi, Wenang, Cingke, Pala, Rodah Sapi, Bendi , Kus-kus, Yaki, Kelapa, Bunga , Tawaang, Pinonton, Kombinasi all of that has its own meaning that is identity of the culture. So, based on the result of this research, the researchers hope that there will be subsequent research in the same way with different theories, methods, and techniques to learn more about the Minahasa culture from different perspectives and aspects to enrich the knowledge of our own local culture.
